Maternity and Childbirth

Why do more women choose to deliver at UHS than at any other hospital in the area?

Perhaps it’s the high-technology equipment we have to care for moms and babies or our highly skilled and dedicated physicians and pregnancy doctors, or maybe it’s our maternity nursing staff judged by some to be the best in prenatal care across New York's Southern Tier. It’s all that and more!

From our soothing home-like labor and delivery suites to our bright and comfortable maternity rooms, we’ve created a cozy, family-centered environment with expert pregnancy doctors at both UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City and UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

Yes, UHS pregnancy doctors deliver more babies than other hospitals in the Norwich and Johnson City areas. But more important, all our experience, all our attention goes into delivering one baby at a time—yours!

Childbirth Education Classes

Our free Childbirth Education classes are offered to expectant moms, dads and others. Classes focus on prepared childbirth, labor, delivery, breastfeeding and infant care.

Classes fill quickly, so please register early. We encourage you to register for all of your classes once you reach your fifth month of pregnancy. You should be finished with all of the classes before your due date.

Childbirth at UHS Wilson Medical Center

UHS Wilson Medical Center is the only hospital in New York's Southern Tier with a perinatologist and neonatologists on staff.

Our Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UHS Wilson Medical Center is certified by New York state and provides the region’s highest degree of care for sick or premature infants, with neonatologists in the hospital around the clock.

We offer laboratory services, ultrasound and anesthesia 24 hours a day. And, with technologically advanced monitors we can track you and your baby throughout the delivery.

Childbirth at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital

Our New York birthing center is on the 3rd floor Maternity unit at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital. The unit has private/single patient labor/delivery/postpartum/ recovery rooms, a whirlpool bath to ease labor, nursery, and a kitchen for laboring patients. The Maternity and Women’s Health Center teams work together to provide a secure and safe environment in which the birth process becomes a family event.

At UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, the Women's Health Center provides compassionate, individualized care to women of all ages. Our skilled OB/GYN practitioners and Midwife offer the highest quality, patient focused medical and surgical care.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital is directly connected to the advanced Neonatal technology and staff offered at UHS Wilson Medical Center.

Prenatal Care in Sherburne and Sidney

Expectant moms in the Sherburne or Sidney area can receive their New York prenatal care locally.

All monthly appointments take place with UHS providers in Sherburne or Sidney and the actual birthing process and labor will take place in your own private labor and delivery room at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

Birthing classes are available for maternity patients as described previously. These classes will take place as scheduled in Norwich.

The Big Day

We offer a full range of birthing options, so you can create the birthing plan that best suits your special needs or desires. Options include water labor, epidurals and a birthing chair.

UHS Wilson Medical Center offers soothing home-like labor and delivery suites and bright and roomy maternity rooms for your comfort. Once you’ve delivered your baby, your nurse will help you move to a room on the Maternity Unit that is better suited to bonding with your new baby and greeting visitors. Birthing rooms are semi-private and each is equipped with its own bathroom. Maternity rooms are also semi-private with their own bathroom.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital offers newly renovated and oversized labor and delivery rooms for you and your new family's comfort. Once you’ve delivered your baby, it is time to bond with them in the same room. Our labor and delivery rooms are private and each is equipped with a bathroom.

Our comprehensive security program incorporates card access, security patrol, specially trained staff, a parent/baby banding system and camera surveillance to ensure your baby is well protected.

Since support is essential to the birthing experience, doulas or volunteer labor supporters are available at some locations to provide emotional and physical assistance during labor. Breastfeeding support is provided by our maternity nurses, with additional help available from certified lactation specialists.

Our visiting policy helps protect your infant and ensures you get the rest you need. Our visiting hours in the Maternity Unit are:

  • A father or significant other stay overnight.
  • Other visitors may visit between 2:00 and 8:30pm.
  • Except for siblings, there should be no visitors under 14 years of age. This is to ensure the health of the newborn.

Since babies are born at all hours of the day and night, our Meals by Request service (currently offered at UHS Wilson) lets you order anything you want from our special menu at any time, just like room service.

Neonatal Care

If your newborn is premature, or has a serious illness, injury or birth defect, a neonatologist may assist at the time of delivery and in the subsequent care of your newborn. If a problem is identified before your baby is born, a neonatologist may become involved to consult with your obstetrician in your baby’s care during your pregnancy.

At Wilson Medical Center we have neonatologists available 24 hours a day. We also have the area’s only New York State Certified Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This means we have the people and technology to provide the highest levels of care for even the tiniest of new arrivals. This will give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your baby has the most advanced care available—just in case.
