In 2023, UHS embarked on a journey to deepen our commitment to equity through the establishment of the Health Equity Committee. This initiative underscores our organization's dedication to inclusivity and fairness for all members of our community.

Equity Initiatives
Behavioral Health
Hepatitis C Elimination
- UHS Behavioral Health provides treatment and care to those who have a comorbidity of Hepatitis C. As of the end of 2024, there are 83 documented Hepatitis C cures through this initiative.
Hepatitis A&B Vaccination
- UHS Behavioral Health teams assess for Hepatitis A and B vaccination and offer these immunizations if there is a preventive care opportunity. In 2024 alone, over 200 vaccines were administered in conjunction with other types of care.
Naloxone Opioid Overdose Prevention Programming
- UHS Behavioral Health works to prevent opioid overdoses and death in the community by training and equipping both community members and professionals on preventive strategies and Naloxone.
- 2622 Naloxone kits were given in 2024, an increase in kits distributed in 2023 by 43%.
Perinatal Services
Birth Equity
- UHS issues a survey to families with infants who have had a 3-120 day NICU stay in an attempt to improve breastfeeding rates and better understand their perceptions on the inclusive, equitable care they received.
Childbirth Education Classes
- UHS offers four separate one-session classes related to the perinatal journey. These are free of charge, in person, and open to the public: Prepared Childbirth, Prenatal Breastfeeding, Getting Ready for Baby, and Baby Safety. Visit nyuhs.org/classes-events to learn more.
Lactation Programming
- UHS is actively working to close the racial gap in willingness to breastfeed. Though our Lactation Consultants as a key part of our Perinatal Care Team, we are focused on educating, coaching, and empowering new Moms with the right tools to be able to successfully breastfeed.
Supply Chain Inclusivity
Access to Appropriate Care and Resources
- UHS offers wheelchair-accessible medical beds and chairs, ensuring patients with mobility challenges are comfortably accommodated.
- Adjustable medical devices are provided in a range of sizes to cater to diverse body types, ensuring optimal comfort and effectiveness.
- For patients with visual or hearing impairments, UHS supplies assistive devices to facilitate communication and ease of care.
- The system also ensures culturally appropriate medical supplies and communication tools, acknowledging the diverse backgrounds of its patient population.
- Gender-neutral medical supplies and clothing are made available, fostering an inclusive environment where patients of all genders feel respected and cared for.
Inclusive Hair Care and Hygiene Products
- Not every patient has the same hair care and hygiene supply needs. To be inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of our patients, UHS offers a variety of shampoos, conditioners, soaps, lotions, and other supplies that are specifically tailored to accommodate all complexions and hair types

Health-Related Social Needs
Food Security
- UHS assesses for Food Insecurity. To address identified concerns, UHS employs a Food Security Coordinator who maintains the UHS Food Pantry and coordinates multiple Food Insecurity programs like the Produce Prescription Program, VINES partnerships, and more.
Intimate Partner Violence
- UHS assesses for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), often called Domestic Violence. Individuals identified to be at high risk for IPV are connected to a Care Coordinator and provided discrete resources for specialized follow up related to crime victim’s assistance and domestic violence survivor supports.
Transportation Coordination
- UHS assesses for Transportation Coordination needs and works in conjunction with community resources to promote access to care. UHS employs a Transportation Coordination team to help organize rides and eliminate barriers to care.
Gender Inclusivity
Gender Neutral Restrooms
- UHS has replaced the signage for public facing restrooms throughout UHS facilities from specified gender restrooms to “All Gender Restroom(s)” to promote a more inclusive and safer environment for patients and staff.
Gender Project
- UHS has updated our medical records system to include options for individuals who identify as non-binary, ensuring both legal sex and gender can be accurately captured.
