Registrars play key role in treatment of cancer
Cancer registrars throughout the world will join their colleagues, fellow medical professionals, and community leaders to observe the 26th annual National Cancer Registrars Week (NCRW), April 4-8, 2022.
Each year, UHS marks this week to recognize registrars within our organization.
The purpose of NCRW is to emphasize the important role cancer registrars play in capturing the data that informs cancer research, prevention, and treatment programs.
The theme for 2022 is Cancer Registrars: Enhance Cancer Care One Data Point at a Time.
Four Certified Tumor Registrars: Kathy Gehm, Christine LoPresti, Judy Malenda, and Cindy Costley, and one trainee: Jackie Francisco, work within the UHS Registry.
“Cancer registrars collect the data that provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs,” said Heather Bodine, Manager of Transcription, Registry and Abstraction at UHS.
Identify cases, manage the cancer registry database and run customize reports are among the many important tasks performed by our Registrar team.
By collecting the data that makes up the cancer history of each cancer patient, information can be provided to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials.
This work helps to evaluate cancer patterns in populations and identify high-risk groups, guide planning and evaluation of cancer control programs and set priorities for allocating health resources.
