Kaitlyn Koban is the July DAISY Award Winner!
A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Kaitlyn Koban, BSN, RN, UHS Binghamton General Hospital Memorial 3, being named the July winner of the DAISY Award! Kaitlyn was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement, and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.
The Memorial 3 nurse received two nominations by family members of a patient in her care. In the first nomination letter, the family spoke about Kaitlyn's empathetic, responsive and thoughtful care at every moment of their family member's stay. The letter went on to speak of her exemplary communication skills to her patient and their family and how she related directly and carefully to her patient, easing their fears. Her nominations came from before and after her patient was transferred to the ICU. The second letter praised Kaitlyn's ability to understand the patient's illness - and the excruciating pain, both physically and emotionally, that come with the illness. She went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that pain was minimal and came up with different solutions to avoid more painful measures.
"She went above and beyond in helping transport [the patient] to ICU for additional care. She is gifted in the best and most meaningful ways of the nursing profession," said the nominating family. "We are grateful and tremendously fortunate to have had her care for [our family member]. We have encountered many excellent nurses at BGH. Kaitlyn is Best of the Best of the Best."
Thank you to Kaitlyn for displaying such Compassion to your patient, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.
Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse, while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
