Jason Gray is our newest DAISY Award Winner

December 20, 2024

A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Jason Gray, BSN, RN, C-EN, UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, Emergency Department, being named the November winner of the DAISY Award! Jason was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.

The emergency department nurse was nominated by the wife of a patient he cared for. In her nomination letter, the patient's wife spoke about Jason's friendly and welcoming demeanor, his personality and how his down-to-earth way of explaining and overall presence helped make the frightening situation they were facing easier to handle. The letter went on to talk about how the patient "does not do doctors" and was very nervous about going in and how Jason's light joking and willingness to explain everything made the patient and his wife comfortable. The couple was grateful for how Jason kept checking in on them and was always willing to engage and never made them feel like a burden.

"I have to say that it is hard to find a nurse that truly loves what they do, is amazing under stress, and still keeps that friendly bedside manner. Jason is absolutely the true definition of a nurse and fits the criteria of all of UHS 5 core values," said the patient's wife. "I know that throughout my husband’s experience, in this whole endeavor, Jason has made a wonderful impact on Brian and will always be remembered for his actions."

Thank you to Jason for displaying such Compassion to your patients and their families, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org

Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.

Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
