Isaiah Buchanan is the October DAISY Award Winner!

November 19, 2021

A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Isaiah Buchanan, RN, CVICU, being named the October winner of the DAISY Award! Isaiah was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement, and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.

"The recognition of Isaiah by this family demonstrates his commitment to compassionate, connected care. Isaiah's attention to the needs of this patient and family was during an integral time in this family's last hours together." said Kay Boland, RN, Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Operating Officer, "His professional practice of nursing is an example to all of us in advocating for patients and families."

Isaiah was nominated by the family member of a patient he helped care for. According to the nomination, Isaiah was there with their family during one of the most difficult times that they had experienced. Their mother was very ill and Isaiah took such wonderful care of her during her last moments. He had a feeling that their mother wasn't doing well and called her children to ensure that their family was present when she passed. Isaiah truly listened to what they had to say and went to bat for them. He helped to ensure that their mom was comfortable and without pain during her final moments.

"He not only took care of Mom, who was his patient, but also cared for us by ensuring there were enough seats, we had water or coffee and that we understood each step that he was taking to care for our mom." said the family member, "He was truly a light in an otherwise dark experience. UHS is lucky to have a nurse that is as caring, compassionate and intelligent as he is, which is why I am nominating him for this award."

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org

Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.

Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse, while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
