Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to fast before some blood tests?

Fasting is necessary before some laboratory tests to ensure accurate results, since some foods interfere with testing. For example, glucose or lipid profiles give a much more accurate result if the patient has fasted prior to having the test. The doctor who orders your test should explain if you need to fast before your laboratory work, or you can call our Laboratory Department in Binghamton and ask about services like blood, glucose or drug testing.

How long is a standing order good for?

Patients who require regular laboratory work may be given a standing order from their physician. A standing order is a convenient way for patients, physicians and the laboratory to monitor certain test levels. Standing orders are good for six months. When a standing order expires, the laboratory sends a notice to your physician requesting a review of the order and renewal, if necessary.

Why might lab tests be delayed?

Before we can perform your lab tests, we must have a complete order from your physician. This includes your first and last name, date of birth, test being ordered, diagnosis code and ordering physician’s signature. If any of this information is incomplete, or if there are special instructions from your doctor, you may have to wait while we contact your physician for clarification.

How can I access my lab results?

Your laboratory results can be viewed by logging into UHS MyChart.  Any questions regarding your lab results are best discussed with your provider.

Can you send a copy of my lab results to my primary care physician or specialist?

Although you may be cared for by more than one doctor, the laboratory is only permitted to send the results to the physician who ordered the test. If you’d like additional copies sent to your other doctors, you need to ask the ordering physician to write this on the order. The name or names of the additional providers must be listed on the order.
