These parasites are known to carry Lyme disease, particularly in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest areas. Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii (found only in the upper Midwest).
