Binghamton, NY – UHS is pleased to announce that we are the first program in the Greater Binghamton and northern Pennsylvania region to earn The Joint Commission‘s Gold Seal of Approval® for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification, the most advanced stroke certification offered by The Joint Commission.

The Joint Commission – an independent, non-profit organization that accredits and certifies healthcare organizations and programs in the United States – offers this certification in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

UHS underwent a rigorous assessment, during which a team of Joint Commission reviewers were on-site and evaluated compliance with certification standards, including 24/7 availability of an acute stroke team, comprehensive diagnostic testing services, experience providing the most complex stroke treatments and the 24/7 ability to meet the needs of two complex stroke patients at the same time. The Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients.

UHS has worked tirelessly to achieve this certification. Last year, a multidisciplinary team was formed under the leadership of Sumeet Multani, MD, Stroke/Neuro Interventional Surgeon and Dawn Wage, RN, UHS Stroke Program Coordinator to prepare for this achievement. The team includes representatives from various patient care areas, including Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging & Radiology, Pharmacy, Laboratory, along with a number of Medical Staff members representing the UHS Stroke Program.

“We have a team prepared to treat the most complex stroke conditions and capable of delivering exceptional outcomes….at any time of the day or night,” said Dr. Sumeet Multani. “The surveyors were highly impressed by the universal dedication of staff across disciplines, the unparalleled commitment to quality of the entire institution and the consistently high-quality care provided to stroke patients at UHS. We are confident our community and the entire region will greatly benefit from the resources and expertise of our Comprehensive Stroke Center, the only location in the region offering the most advanced treatments for stroke care.”

“This certification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our stroke team and every UHS employee who supports our stroke patients,” said John M. Carrigg, president and chief executive officer of UHS. “Our community is fortunate to have this amazing team ready to care for them should they ever be needed.”

The Gold Seal, provided to UHS and the Stroke Program, is a symbol of quality that reflects the healthcare organization’s commitment to providing safe, quality patient care and recognizes organizations that provide consistent communication and collaboration among all providers throughout the patient care process.
