Philip Nedlik is the January DAISY Award recipient
A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Philip Nedlik, MSN, FNP-C, RN, UHS Newark Valley Primary Care, being named the January winner of the DAISY Award! Philip was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement, and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.
The primary care nurse was nominated by the mother of children Philip cares for. In her nomination letter, the mother talks about the exemplary and compassionate care he gives to their family and how he listens to, and addresses, their concerns, earning their trust completely.
She goes on to talk about a recent experience in which her daughter was not happy about being at a doctor’s office, but Philip came in with a smile, got down to her level and talked with her. Philip left the mother speechless as he got her daughter to calm down by talking to her. He was able to perform his checks, including looking at her throat and in her ears. The genuine finesse and calm attitude he had truly was exemplary.
"As a family, we would follow him as a nurse practitioner wherever he would go, although we truly hope he stays at UHS Newark Valley," said the patient's mother. "We have never had a nurse practitioner who is so compassionate, who respected our needs and desires as parents, who worked with his co-workers as a team, and who we trusted implicitly. This is especially important now as we have young children."
Thank you Philip for displaying such Compassion for this patient, one of UHS’ Values and a stellar example of a member of our team living The UHS Way!
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.
Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse, while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
