Aly Fish is our newest DAISY Award Winner
A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Aly Fish, BSN, RN, UHS Wilson Medical Center Intensive Care Unit (ICU), being named the July winner of the DAISY Award! Aly was recognized for her achievement and presented with the award as she enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.
The ICU nurse was nominated by a family member of a patient she cared for. In the nomination letter, the family member spoke about the exceptional dedication and care they received from Aly during a profoundly challenging time for their family. The letter went on to talk about how their son experienced a serious spinal cord injury, and from the moment they met Aly, her compassion and professionalism shone through. She consistently went above and beyond her duties, not only in administering medical care but also in providing emotional support to both their son and family. During overnight shifts, Aly took the time to listen to their son and relate to him, helping make a vulnerable situation less scary and alone feeling.
"Aly went out of her way to not only make our son feel important, but us as well. Her empathy extended beyond the medical realm, creating a comforting environment where we all felt understood and cared for," said the nominating family member. "Aly deserves recognition for her outstanding contributions and care. Her commitment to excellence, compassionate care and genuine empathy makes her a true asset to your healthcare team. We are forever grateful for her role in our son’s care and recovery. Thank you, Aly!"
Thank you to Aly for displaying such Compassion to your patients and their family members, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.
Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
