Walton nurse receives hospital honor

Paul Summers, president of UHS Delaware Valley Hospital,

Mary Doig, RN, is the recipient of the most recent Sally Dean Award presented by UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

Ms. Doig, who serves as director of Emergency and Ambulatory Services at the Walton hospital, was nominated overwhelmingly by members of the UHS Delaware Valley staff.

Letters of endorsement acknowledging her clinical ability and caring nature also were received from patients and from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.

In their nominations, Ms. Doig's colleagues spoke of her many qualities as a leader and caregiver: "A great role model. Even on vacation she is available to us. A reminder of why I became a nurse. Exemplary leadership. A credit to her profession and our facility. At the fair booth, she listened intently and made each person feel better with her empathy and encouragement. An advocate for the patient. She has left a professional imprint on me and her staff."

Many Delaware County area residents know Ms. Doig, as she has cared for them as patients during her years at the hospital.

But some may not know about her other contributions and tireless work to ensure UHS Delaware Valley staff are ready should any kind of disaster occur. She serves on hospital and county preparedness committees. Her leadership in the Emergency Department ensures that patients receive high-quality care in a caring manner.

The Sally Dean Award is the Walton hospital's highest honor, and was created in memory of Sally Dean, RN. During her tenure at UHS Delaware Valley, the late Ms. Dean treated patients, visitors and colleagues with true dedication, commitment and compassion.

In accepting the award from Paul Summers, president and chief executive officer of UHS Delaware Valley, Ms. Doig said that she had worked with Ms. Dean and knew firsthand of her care and support for patients and colleagues, which made receiving the award all the more special and meaningful for her.
