UHS Upper Front to remain open during street construction
Upper Front Street in Binghamton will be closed for 10 days in July and August at the Old Front Street/Interchange 5 ramps to and from Interstate 81 southbound.
The street is scheduled to close at midnight/Monday morning, July 25, and to reopen at midnight/Thursday morning, Aug. 4, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.
It is important to note that UHS Primary Care Upper Front Street, at 1290 Front St., will remain open during the entire construction period, and will be accessible to patients and staff. Patients should report for their appointments as usual.
All motorists in the area should be aware of the closure and should plan accordingly, as alternate routes will be marked.
This will be a complete closure of the intersection for a 10-day period, to include the on-ramp, off-ramp and through-traffic in both directions on Upper Front Street. Motorists will still have access to and from Old Front Street from Upper Front Street north of the closure.
Important points:
- The construction is part of the project to create a second roundabout.
- The closure will affect all traffic flow, including emergency vehicle traffic. There will be no exceptions allowing emergency vehicles through the closure, so it will be necessary for emergency responders to use other routes.
- Upper Front Street access to and from Old Front Street will be maintained on a temporary roadway on the north side of the intersection, but Upper Front Street will be closed to southbound and northbound traffic from the intersection to the south side of the new bridge near the existing roundabout.
- The roundabout already in place at the northbound ramp location will remain open. Northbound traffic on Upper Front Street will be directed to use I-81 north to Exit 6. Southbound motorists on Upper Front Street will be advised of the closure and should seek an alternate route.
- I-81 southbound traffic will be advised to use either Exit 6 or Exit 4A. I-88 westbound traffic will be advised to use either I-81 Exit 6 or I-81 Exit 4A.
Updates to this construction announcement will be published on nyuhs.org.
