UHS hosts survivors of suicide loss day event
Saturday, November 23 is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather around to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope.
UHS will hold a Survivor Day event in the Russell Community Room at UHS Binghamton General Hospital, Mitchell Avenue, at 11 a.m. The event is held in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention South Central NY Chapter (AFSP) and B.C. SAFE (Broome County Suicide Awareness for Everyone).
For many loss survivors, attending a Survivor Day event is an opportunity to discover that they are not alone in their experience of losing someone they know and love to suicide.
The event will include a screening of an AFSP-produced documentary, Pathways to Healing: Hope after Suicide Loss. The documentary follows the family and friends of Chris Taddeo, a young adult who died by suicide. Together, they show the individual experiences a community of people can have after a shared loss: from confusion and denial, to isolation and finding support. Through their various approaches to grief and healing, each journey shares a message of hope, connection and resilience.
Preregistration is appreciated. Visit Survivor Day Binghamton.
For those who are unable to attend a Survivor Day event in person, AFSP hosts a Survivor Day program online at www. afsp.org/SurvivorDay.
For the media: Please understand that this is a healing conference for those grieving after a suicide and that we must be sensitive to their loss and mindful of their privacy. We are unable to allow audio or video recording, photography, or interviews with survivors. We will make our clinical experts available for interviews. Thank you for your understanding.
