UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital’s National Quilting Day Baby

In recognition of National Quilting Day, Saturday, March 16, the Chenango Piecemakers Quilt Guild celebrated by presenting a special quilt to the first baby born that day at Chenango Memorial Hospital. The guild does this every year and uses this gifted quilt to celebrate their special holiday. This year, the quilt was presented to Alexander, new son of Kaleigh and Matt, residents of Norwich. Alexander was born on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17 and weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces, and stretched out at 20”. Nancy Carney and Alice Murray, representing the guild, extended the group’s warm wishes as they presented this colorful zoo themed quilt, which was made especially for the National Quilting Day baby. Each year’s handmade gift has a different theme and name. The parents were delighted with the quilt and plan to hang it in the baby’s room with the matching theme.

A small group of women who enjoy quilting began the guild in 1986. Currently, there are over 50 members. The Piecemakers have a very strong sense of community and use their love of quilting to not only promote the art, but also as a commitment to serve through projects such as this. They are among the generous community members who make and donate quilts to many newborns born at Chenango Memorial and other patients and residents.

The tradition of the “First Baby” quilt began years ago as a significant way to observe National Quilting Day by involving the community.

The Chenango Piecemakers meet the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 11 West Main Street in Norwich.  Anyone interested in joining the guild or in learning more about what they do is welcome to stop by during any evening.
