Family health histories will be counselor's topic
Do you know your family health history?
Are you aware of your personal health risks?
Are you interested in the topic of genetics?
You can have an introduction to all the latest information on family health histories by attending an evening seminar at the UHS Stay Healthy Center at the Oakdale Mall.
The free program will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stay Healthy.
The presenter will be Luba Djurdjinovic, MS, genetic counselor and executive director of the Ferre Institute Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides services in genetic and reproductive health.
A family health history is a tool anyone can use to understand their lifetime health risks, so it's important to ask family members about medical conditions and record the information. Thanksgiving has been designated as National Family Health History Day.
The Nov. 1 presentation will describe how and what should be recorded. There will be particular attention to family histories of heart disease, cancer and neurological disorders.
Registration is required, as seating is limited: Call 763-5092, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or register online by finding the "Adult Wellness Seminars" page on nyuhs.org.
The seminar is one of a number of presentations Stay Healthy has been offering on diet, exercise, wellness and lifestyles for good health.
