2023 National Quilting Day baby at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital
In recognition of National Quilting Day, Saturday, March 18, the Chenango Piecemakers Quilting Guild celebrated by presenting a special quilt to the first baby born on or after Saturday at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.
This year, the handmade and colorful quilt was presented to Maverick, is the son of Brooke and Zackary, residents of Norwich. Maverick was born on Wednesday, March 22 and weighed in at 8 pounds 6 ounces and measured 21inches long.
Nancy Carney and Pat Olson representing the guild, extended the group’s warm wishes as they presented this one of a kind quilt, which was made especially for the National Quilting Day baby. The parents were delighted with the quilt.
A small group of women who enjoy quilting began the guild in 1986. Currently, there are over 50 members. The Piecemakers have a very strong sense of community and use their love of quilting to not only promote the art, but also as a commitment to serve through projects such as this. They are among the generous community members who make and donate quilts to many newborns born at UHS Chenango Memorial and other patients and residents.
The tradition of the “First Baby” quilt began years ago as a significant way to observe National Quilting Day by involving the community.
The Chenango Piecemakers meet on a monthly basis. Anyone interested in joining the guild or in learning more about what they do is welcome.
