Our most recent DAISY Award winner is Annmarie Gallagher

November 14, 2024

A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Annmarie Gallagher, BSN, RN, UHS Wilson Medical Center, Labor & Delivery, being named the August winner of the DAISY Award! Annmarie was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.

The Labor & Delivery nurse was nominated by a patient she cared for. In the nomination letter, the patient spoke about how extremely kind and compassionate Annmarie was from the moment they were admitted due to fetal demise. The patient went on to talk about the incomprehensible anxiety, pain, and sadness she and her husband felt as they entered the hospital room and how Annmarie eased all of these emotions and went above and beyond for them. The patient spoke about Annmarie's genuine care for their family and unborn child, which was shown in her words and actions, crediting Annmarie for taking a situation that the family came into the hospital dreading and turning it into one they could manage.

"From popping into the room asking if we needed new cold cranberry juices, having conversations full of laughter on a day where we thought laughing would not happen, to doing such beautiful post-mortem care for our child and making sure we were comfortable with our decisions every step of the way, Annmarie’s care was above and beyond any nursing care someone could give," said the nominating patient. "I would give her twenty Daisy Awards for what she did for us that day. I don’t even think that would be enough recognition for her. We could not thank her enough when her shift was over, and we truly cannot get over how much she changed our lives that day by making our situation bearable and comforting."

Thank you to Annmarie for displaying such Compassion and Respect for your patients and their families, a stellar example of our team living "The UHS Way!"

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org

Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.

Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
