The February DAISY Award winner is Katelyn Allabaugh!
A program to recognize the care and compassion of extraordinary nurses continues at UHS with Katelyn Allabaugh, RN, UHS Binghamton General Hospital Emergency Department, being named the February winner of the DAISY Award! Katelyn was recognized and presented with the award for the achievement, and enjoyed cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.
The Emergency Department nurse was nominated by a colleague, Andy. In his nomination letter, he spoke about how Katelyn went above and beyond when the ED was very busy and her shift was ending. When a challenging situation arose with a patient Katelyn had gained the trust of in the past, instead of going home, Katelyn chose to stay and help out. Katelyn spoke incredibly kindly to the patient and was instrumental in getting the patient to explain her feelings, and, most importantly, Katelyn was able to leverage the trust the patient had in her to get the patient into a safe environment. She did all of this well past the end of her scheduled shift, when it would have been much easier for her to go home and say “not my problem.”
"In a high-stress and overwhelming environment, she did not make the patient feel like they were a problem or burden or just 'in the system' waiting for the next step; she showed compassion and respect to the patient, sacrificing her own weekend time (and much-needed rest) to help the patient get into a safe place, both physically and mentally," said Andy. "Watching that interaction reminded me that even in the hectic chaos that is the Emergency Department, patients still rely on, and trust, their nurses with their well-being. She truly displayed the best of the UHS values that morning."
Thank you Katelyn for displaying such Compassion and Respect for this patient, one of UHS’ Values and a stellar example of a member of our team living "The UHS Way!"
Congratulations are in order for Katelyn beyond receiving this wonderful award. Katelyn recently accepted the position of nurse coordinator in the UHS Binghamton General Hospital Emergency Department! Congratulations on this well-deserved promotion!
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after the Seattle man died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, the family members deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his loved ones. When he died, they felt compelled to say thank you to nurses in a very public way. To learn more, visit DAISYFoundation.org.
Started at UHS in April 2021, nurses are nominated by anyone in the organization - patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff - anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care being provided by a nurse.
Nominations are submitted by using a form found on NYUHS.org. On this form, the person will be able to tell the story of why they are nominating the nurse, while also choosing which UHS Value (Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation) the nurse displayed.
